The High Court of Tanzania, Mtwara Zone, has sentenced two out of seven police officers to death by hanging for the murder of 25-year-old gemstone dealer Mussa Hamisi from Lindi Region.

The verdict was delivered on Monday June 23, 2025, by Justice Hamidu Mwanga.
The convicted officers are Head of Criminal Investigations in Mtwara District, Superintendent of police, Gilbert Kalanje, and Officer in Charge of the Mtwara Police Station, Assistant Superintendent of police, Charles Onyango.
The court found them directly responsible for the murder, which occurred at the Mitengo Police Station where the victim was allegedly injected with a lethal substance.
His body was later dumped in Hiari Forest, Mtwara.
The murder took place on January 5, 2022, after Hamisi reportedly demanded the return of over Sh33.7 million cash money allegedly taken from him by the officers during a search.
Five other officers were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The case, registered as Criminal Case No. 15 of 2023, involved a legal team of 17 lawyers—nine for the prosecution and eight for the defense.
