Kenya Police arrests sacked Prisons Commissioner-General

NAIROBI, Kenya

Immediate former Kenya Prisons Commissioner-General, Wycliffe Ogalo has been arrested hours after he was sacked from office.

Ogalo was arrested alongside Kamiti Prison Commandant Charles Mutembei and his deputy by the Anti-Terror Police Unit and they are currently being held at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

The fired Prisons Commissioner-General was bundled onto a waiting police car outside the Magereza building before being driven off to DCI headquarters for grilling.

Ogalo, a former provincial administrator, has been the head of the Kenya prison for the last two years.

The arrest comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta summoned top security officials at the Interior Ministry led by SC Fred Matiang’i over the rampant prison breaks that have been witnessed by the country in the last few months.

The most recent prison break comes three days ago when three terror convicts escaped Kamiti Maximum Prison under unknown circumstances.

Following the sacking of Ogalo, President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba and was since been sworn into the top Prisons office.

The president also directed CS Matiang’i to use all the available resources to ensure that the Kamiti escapees are rearrested.

He also asked investigative agencies to bring into the book any person who could have been involved in the escape of the convicts.
