Flash floods and mudslides along Kenya’s Elgeyo-Marakwet and West Pokot border may have left several dead and destroyed property worth thousands.
Elgeyo-Marakwet Police Commander John Mwinzi gave a statement saying that several areas have been cut off and inaccessible.
“We have received reports the area has been hit by landslides and floods. Reports are that so many people have been affected. We have a challenge of accessing the area because all bridges have been swept away,” said Mr Mwinzi.
He called upon the national government to provide them with helicopters to aid them in assessing the situation.
According to Deputy Commissioner Were Simuyu, assessment of the extent of damage caused by the floods is underway.
He is quoted saying, “We have received reports that Chesogon market, the Technical Training Institute, the police post and the primary school there have been submerged.”
