TEL AVIV, Israel
Israeli Transport Minister, Miri Regev, called for the burning of the body of Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar (pictured below) at a meeting of the Israeli security cabinet, she revealed on Monday.
Speaking to the ultra-Orthodox Israeli radio station Kol Barama, Regev said that “there are certain symbols we should not return”.
“Because we know the Middle East and what happens in the region, I say that I don’t want to see Sinwar return to be buried,” she added.
Sinwar was killed in fighting with Israeli forces in October 2024.
Last week, after a ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump came into effect in the Gaza Strip, Israel released new images showing Israeli military commanders standing over Sinwar’s body.

Regev, a member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party, told Kol Barama, “I proposed in the cabinet to burn Sinwar’s body just like the Americans burned Bin Laden”.
Contrary to her statement however, US forces did not burn Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden’s body after they killed him in Pakistan in 2011, but buried him at sea.
Regev said that the security cabinet had not commented on her proposal, but the Israeli news website YNet reported that her suggestion was under review by security officials.
During ceasefire negotiations, Hamas demanded the return of the bodies of Yahya Sinwar and his brother Mohammed but this has been refused by Israel.
Israel on Monday however returned the bodies of 135 Palestinians to the Gaza Strip, many showing signs of horrific torture.
It continues to hold the bodies of hundreds of Palestinians it has killed or who have died in detention.
Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip has killed 68,216 Palestinians since October 2023 and completely devastated the territory. The true death toll is believed to be much higher because the bodies of thousands of uncounted victims are trapped under rubble.
