EU Parliamentarians condemned abduction of former Tanzania's Ambassador to Cuba

BRUSSELS,  Belgium

The abduction of former Tanzanian Ambassador to Cuba and political analyst, Humphrey Polepole, continues to ignite widespread debate, following condemnation from Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), who described the incident as “horrifying” and demanding swift action.

Six members of the EU Parliament have issued a strong statement condemning the disappearance of Polepole, who has been missing since October 6, 2025.

In their official statement, the members said the incident reflects the ongoing abduction, torture, and intimidation of political opponents, journalists, and human rights defenders in Tanzania.

The members, Barry Andrews, Robert Biedroń, Udo Bullmann, Michael Gahler, Erik Marquardt, and David McAllister, called on the Tanzanian government to immediately release all abducted individuals, ensure their safety, investigate the incidents, and hold perpetrators accountable.

They also called for an end to impunity and demanded guarantees for freedom of expression and assembly.

The statement further appeals to the European Union to closely monitor the situation, apply diplomatic pressure, and support civil society actors working to uphold human rights in Tanzania.

Polepole’s disappearance has sparked international alarm, with rights groups and foreign governments demanding transparency and accountability ahead of Tanzania’s October 29, general elections.
