Zambia court confiscated properties of former President Edgar Lungu's son

LUSAKA, Zambia

The High Court of Zambia, Corruption and Economic Offences Division, has confiscated the assets of Dalitso Lungu, the son of former President Edgar Lungu.

The judgment was read today in Lusaka where the confiscated assets are 79 cars, including luxury cars such as Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Lamborghini, which he has been seen driving in posh areas in Lusaka and South Africa.

Along with the cars, the court has also confiscated a petrol station in Lusaka owned by Dalitso, as well as 6 luxury houses he bought in the areas of Ibex Hill and Silverest (Lusaka), as well as the wealthy streets of Riverside and Parklands in the Copperbelt.

He has been left with one house that was gifted to him by his father.

The court said it confiscated the assets because Dalitso had no work to generate income, other than being the President's son.

Since he failed to explain to the court how he acquired the assets, the court has interpreted the assets as proceeds of crime and thus confiscated them as public property in accordance with Section 32st of the Proceeds of Crime Act, Zambia.

Initially, the prosecution claimed that Dalitso used his father's position in power to amass wealth illegally.

Part of the judgment said "The Court finds that Dalitso Lungu had no job or any legitimate source of income that could explain the ownership of the assets, and therefore from today all his assets are considered proceeds of crime and are confiscated."

The house that Dalitso was gifted by his father, has been removed from the list of properties confiscated by the Court.

The prosecution has stated that it is closely investigating Dalitso's alleged properties in South Africa and Dubai so that they can also be confiscated.

This comes almost 8 months after President Edgar Lungu's death, and has not been buried due to ongoing tensions between the family and the Zambian government.
