Critically ill Uganda opposition leader taken from hospital to prison

KAMPALA,  Uganda

Veteran Uganda opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has been returned to Luzira Maximum Security Prison after a brief medical visit to The Clinic at Village Mall Bugolobi, Kampala on Sunday.

Besigye, who is detained on charges of illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and treachery, had been transferred to the private medical facility amid mounting concerns over his deteriorating health.

Doctors described his condition as “physically weak” and “worrying and unstable.”

However, after a short consultation with his doctor, Besigye was quickly transported back to Luzira in an ambulance under tight security.

Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, has strongly condemned the handling of his case, asserting that the government is toying with his health and well-being rather than allowing him proper medical care.

Previously, Besigye’s family had called his detention “state-sanctioned kidnapping” and placed full responsibility for his safety on President Yoweri Museveni.

Information Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, who visited Besigye at Luzira earlier, said the government remains committed to ensuring Besigye’s well-being “while we fast-track the transfer of his case from the court martial to a civil court.”
