Ramaphosa set to meet Biden on sidelines of UNGA 77

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to meet his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden later this week for bilateral talks.

The talks were confirmed on Monday by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, who noted that the two presidents will meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

"President Ramaphosa and President Biden will discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest, including trade and investment, climate change, food security, energy, and peace and security,” she said.

Pandor added that President Ramaphosa will also use the opportunity to “further emphasize the need for enhanced multilateralism and dialogue to address challenges facing humanity.”

The U.S. is South Africa’s third largest trading partner (after China and the European Union), with more than 600 United States companies operating in South Africa.

According to Pandor, the U.S. is a major export market for South Africa, a significant source of foreign direct investment, technology transfer, development assistance and tourism.
