ARUA, Uganda
At least 14 people have died after consuming locally brewed alcohol in Uganda’s Arua city, and several others are still hospitalized.
According to the Uganda Daily Monitor, the first person died on Friday. The others succumbed over the remainder of the weekend.
Seven of the deaths occurred in Mvara and Oluko suburbs of Arua City while seven others died in Madi Okollo District.
"We have picked samples of the gin which will be taken to the government analytical laboratory in Kampala to ascertain if it is not good for human consumption,” Daily Monitor quotes Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Police spokesperson.
The drink they consumed is packed in small 200ml bottles and sold for 39 U.S. cents, prices that are much cheaper than other alcoholic brands.
Several people have been arrested in connection to the investigation and the place where the gin was manufactured has been closed off to the public.
