Sudan's military leader dismisses top ministers ahead of government reshuffle

KHARTOUM,  Sudan

Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dismissed Foreign Minister Ali Yousif and Religious Affairs and Endowments Minister Omer Bakhit on Thursday, the two outgoing ministers confirmed.

Dismissed Foreign Minister Ali Yousif

The move comes amid reports that the dismissal list includes five other ministers, paving the way for the formation of a new government, sources told Sudan Tribune.

Yousif and Bakhit were appointed on November 3, 2024, as part of a limited cabinet reshuffle that also included new ministers for information and trade.

Although the dismissals have not yet been officially decreed, both Yousif and Bakhit confirmed their removal in separate posts on social media platforms.

In his post, Yousif wrote: “I step down today satisfied with what I have contributed to my dear country. I will remain a loyal soldier to my homeland. My abundant thanks and appreciation go to my fellow ministers and officials with whom I served and with whom we established cooperation, consultation, and mutual support.”

He added that he took charge of the foreign ministry amid “enormous challenges,” saying he had “exerted my utmost effort” and found “full cooperation from the ministry’s staff who rose to the occasion with dedication, contribution, and selflessness.”

Similarly, Bakhit confirmed on his social media account that he had received the decision removing him as Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments.

He expressed appreciation to the country’s leadership for both the initial trust placed in him with the appointment and for the decision to relieve him of his duties.

Sources speaking to Sudan Tribune indicated that Thursday’s dismissals would be followed by the removal of other ministers ahead of the expected announcement of a new government.

The potential reshuffle follows amendments made earlier to the country’s Constitutional Document.
