ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia

The African Union Commission (AUC) has appointed three eminent African personalities to a High-Level Panel on Sudan, tasked with facilitating an inclusive process towards the swift restoration of peace, constitutional order, and stability in the country.

Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas

The Panel, which will be chaired by Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the AU High Representative for Silencing the Guns, comprises Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe, former Vice President of Uganda, and Ambassador Francisco Madeira, former Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission (SRCC) to Somalia and Head of AMISOM/ATMIS.

The appointment of the High-Level Panel follows a decision by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) in October 2023, which urged the AUC to take steps to support the Sudanese people in their efforts to achieve peace and stability.

The Panel will work closely with all Sudanese stakeholders, including civilian forces, military belligerents, and regional and global actors, to facilitate an inclusive dialogue and negotiations leading to a comprehensive peace agreement.

AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed his gratitude to the three eminent personalities for accepting to serve the AU on this crucial mission and called on all Sudanese stakeholders and the international community to extend their full cooperation and support to the Panel members.

“The situation in Sudan requires our collective attention and engagement. The AU High-Level Panel will work tirelessly to bring about an end to the conflict and pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for the Sudanese people,” said Chairperson Faki Mahamat.
