The son of Osama bin Laden was killed in a US counter-terrorism operation, President Donald Trump has confirmed.
A statement from the White House said: “Hamza bin Ladin, the high-ranking al-Qa’ida member and son of Osama bin Ladin, was killed in a United States counter-terrorism operation in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region.
Hamza bin Laden was on the US wanted list of terrorists with a $1m bounty on his head.
The New York Times reported it had spoken to two officials who confirmed his death and said the US had played a role in the operation “but it was not clear how”.
Hamza is believed to be about 30 years old and is the 15th of Osama bin Laden’s 56 children.
Former al Qaeda leader Osama was killed in a US Special Forces raid in 2011.
His son Hamza became an increasingly prominent figure in the organization and a US State Department says he has “threatened attacks against the United States and allies”.
He has released tapes and video messages calling for attacks, urging followers to: “Be perfect in your choice of targets, so that you may damage your enemies more.”
Earlier this year, the US offered a $1m (£755,000) reward for help locating the al Qaeda member.
His whereabouts were unknown but it was believed he had been hiding in either Afghanistan or Pakistan.
