Tanzania Police Force X account hacked

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania

A social media account affiliated with the Tanzania Police Force was compromised on Tuesday morning.  The hackers posted unverified messages and even held a live broadcast on the X page owned by Tanzanian police.

On Tuesday morning, the hackers disseminated a false death report targeting President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The account, which has approximately 468,705 followers, last posted an update on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

Police in Tanzania have been using the account to inform the public on criminal proceedings and other initiatives within their mandate.

The latest comes at a time when President Suluhu is in conflict with her opponent Tundu Lissu, who has been charged with treason.

On Monday Suluhu said foreign activists would not be allowed to “interfere” in the country's affairs after several tried to attend the trial of opposition leader.

"We have started to observe a trend in which activists from within our region are attempting to intrude and interfere in our affairs," Hassan said in a televised speech during the launch of the country’s new foreign policy.

Suluhu urged the country’s security and defence organs “not to allow ill-mannered individuals from other countries to cross the line here."

Her comments came just hours after several Kenyan rights activists were denied entry to Tanzania and deported to Nairobi.

“If they have been controlled in their country, let them not come to disrupt us. Let us not give them the chance; they have already destabilised their countries and the only remaining peaceful nation is Tanzania.”
