Macron to meet 220 mayors after sixth night of riots

PARIS, France

French President, Emmanuel Macron will receive the mayors of 220 cities affected by the unrest in the country over the past five days at the Elysee Palace on Tuesday, July 4, the TV channel reported. 

Macron held a meeting with Prime Minister Elisabeth Born and the interior and justice ministers at the Elysee Palace, as announced Sunday afternoon.

"Emmanuel Macron will receive more than 220 mayors affected by the riots at the Elysee Palace on Tuesday,” a source familiar with the president’s meeting with ministers said. said.

The channel added that Macron will meet with Senate president Gerard Larcher on Monday, followed by National Assembly Speaker Yael Braun-piwe.

On Tuesday morning, police officers shot and killed a 17-year-old during a road check in Nanterre. 

Riots lasting several days broke out in some cities of France. Across the country, youth set fire to about 3.8 thousand cars, as well as police and government buildings, according to the Interior Ministry. 

According to the Ministry of Economy, nearly 250 bank branches, 200 grocery stores and 10 shopping centers were looted. 

In some cities, police special forces were deployed, armored vehicles and helicopters were deployed. In total, about 3,000 people were detained, most of them minors.
