KISUMU, Kenya
Kenya’s protesters opposing the
government of President William Ruto have this afternoon flocked the Kondole
area in Kisumu city.
This follows the announcement
of the countrywide mass action by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party
leader Raila Odinga.
In a short video shared by the
Movement for Defense of Democracy (MDD) on Twitter, the protesters chanted
anti-government slogans as they marched along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.
Some of the protestors rode on
motorcycles while others carried placards with anti-government slogans.
The residents who held
demonstrations in protest over the high cost of living converged in Kondele
where they started matching towards the county commissioner's office.
While honouring Raila's call
to hold protests, the locals turned up in large numbers.
The residents walked past police roadblocks and headed towards the state lodge.
They said that they will not
be stopped from using a public road which had been blocked by police officers.
Local leaders who participated
in the demos included Kisumu deputy governor Mathew's Owili, Kisumu County
assembly speaker Elisha Oraro and MCAs Seth Kanga (Market Milimani), Ben Adega
(Kajulu) and Joachim Oketch (Kondele).
Owili said as the people of
Kisumu, they will stand with Raila, saying they will not recognise the Ruto
Presidency. “We are calling the police to join us on 20th March as
we begin our mass action,” Owili says.
The opposition coalition, Azimio
la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga yesterday launched a resistance movement to pile
pressure on President William Ruto’s administration as he seeks to drive a
political and economic reforms agenda whose end game is to force the government
to ease the cost of living, reduce taxes and become more inclusive.
To be known as the Movement
for the Defence of Democracy, the political outfit will among other things lead
in peaceful protests, sit-ins and boycotts aimed at forcing the government to
make life more bearable for Kenyans.
