Rwanda President Paul Kagame to defend seat for the 4th time

By Our Correspondent, KIGALI Rwanda

Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who has been in power since 2000, now says he will be seeking to defend his seat in 2024.

Speaking to French TV, Kagame said he will vie for the fourth time in the next general elections.

"I would consider running for another 20 years. I have no problem with that. Elections are about people choosing," Kagame told the news outlet.

The 64-year-old ascended to the country’s top seat after rebel forces helped end the Rwandan genocide that killed about a million people.

Since then, Kagame has been re-elected three consecutive times on a seven-year term, as is stipulated by the Constitution in the Central African nation, both in 2003 and 2017.

Despite having won the elections with over 90 per cent of the total votes, international observers have questioned the electoral processes citing numerous irregularities and State intimidation.
