Sudanese Islamist groups form new political coalition

KHARTOUM, Sudan

Ten Islamic political groups early this week announced the formation of a new political coalition under the name of “The Broad Islamic Current” and mobilized a large number of their members at the Freedom Square in Khartoum to commemorate the Great Battle of Badr.

Among the signatories appear the Islamic Movement, a façade of the banned National Congress Party (NCP) and the State of Law and Development Party of Mohamed Ali al-Jazouli, a supporter of the Islamic State (IS) released recently from prison.

The coalition, which does not include the Popular Congress Party (PCP), aims to coordinate the efforts of the Islamist groups before the general elections at the end of the transition.

The Sudanese Islamists seek to take advantage of the new political environment created by the coup d’état of General al-Burhan who reinstated the Islamist elements in the civil service and security services.

Al-Burhan, also, speaks about the need to involve all the political groups that were allied to the NCP in the former regime of Omer al-Bashir including the PCP.

Speaking in a press conference held to launch the coalition, NCP leading member Amin Hassan Omer said they have not yet established an organisational structure adding they would leave this task for the youth in the respective groups.

The Islamist groups organised a Ramadan iftar meal for their supporters in the Freedom Square, east of Khartoum, in commemoration of the Great Badr Battle, with the participation of prominent NCP leaders.

The participants chanted slogans against the left and in support of the ruling military component after the coup of October 25, 2021. - Sudan Tribune
