President of Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi has invited his counterparts Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi for a mini-summit in the eastern city of Goma.
During a Cabinet Meeting
held on Friday in the capital Kinshasa, President Tshisekedi said that he had
invited the leaders of DRC’s Eastern neighbours for a summit for an agenda
including; Peace and security in the region; Diplomatic and political relations
between these states; Revival of economic activities in the current context of
the fight against COVID-19.
The Congolese leader
instructed his Ministers for the Interior, Foreign Affairs, International
Cooperation, Defense and Foreign Trade in their attributions to put together
the elements which must constitute the file on the position of the DRC in
relation to its neighbours.
Our Correspondent has reliably learnt
that the summit has been scheduled to take place in September, however, a
precise date has not been set.
This summit will also be an
opportunity for Évariste Ndayishimiye to present his intentions and his vision.
The former Deputy Chief of Staff of Burundi’s new National Defense Forces (FDN)
succeeded Pierre Nkurunziza as head of his country.
Meanwhile, President
Tshisekedi has sent his emissaries to Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi to clarify the
agenda and the specific questions that will be at the heart of the discussions.
However, DRC government said, the Goma summit should not be confused with the classic quadripartite that seeks to negotiate Uganda and Rwanda into implementing a friendship agreement reached in Luanda, Angola. - Africa
